After a disappointing three game set with losses to Ohio and Louisville, UMBC notched two wins this past weekend. The Retrievers beat Towson (ACHA D1) 5-4 on Friday and MACH South rival Virginia Tech 4-2 on Saturday.
In Friday night's game against Towson, at approximately the four minute mark into the first period, team captain Ryan Atkinson tallied the first Retriever goal with assists from Colin Edwards and Jean-Luc Durantaye. he scoring went back and forth until midway through the third period when Ryan Atkinson scored his second of the night to give the Retrievers their first two goal lead of the game. UMBC would not relinquish their lead as goaltender Dylan Knox remained strong all night while seeing a healthy dose of rubber as the Retrievers were outshot 54-29 for the game. UMBC never trailed in the game and Towson scored a late powerplay goal with 12 seconds remaining to pull within one.
In Saturday's matinee game against MACH South rival Virginia Tech, assistant captain Jean-Luc Durantaye tipped home a shot from by defenseman Brennan Johnsson for a power play goal nearly six minutes into the game. Although VT would get a late first period goal to tie the game at one, the game was never in doubt for the Retrievers. UMBC had a relentless attack all game and did a great job keeping VT to the outside. UMBC would score two goals in the second period, a power play goal by Brennan Johnsson and an even strength goal by Jean-Luc Durantaye. With nearly five minutes to play in the third period, a VT forward would pick up a loose puck which errantly deflected off the referee and put it past Dylan Knox to cut the UMBC lead to 3-2. As VT continued to press and with an empty net, UMBC forward Colin Edwards scored to seal the game with less than a minute remaining. Knox again was strong in net saving 36 of the 38 shots he faced as UMBC outshot VT 48-38.
Next weekend the Retrievers host New York University on Saturday evening (5:45pm) and Rowan University on Sunday evening (5:15pm).
